JIL AS A NATION-LOVING CHURCH

(One heartbeat at a time)

Why do many people don’t believe in God? Probably because all they see around them is crushing cruelty, unabated corruption and oppressive poverty.

How does that song go again?

“You, you are changing the world

One little heartbeat at a time

Making history with every touch and every smile

Oh, you, you may not see it now

But I believe that time will tell

How you, you are changing the world

One little heartbeat at a time”

That song was meant for mothers by Steven Curtis Chapman. But, the way it actually is, this part of the song can be taken out to mean something just as profound: That we are all parents of the next generation. What we do now will set the history that the next generations will follow. One heartbeat at a time.

One heartbeat at a time. Let me be Your heart. Help me value what You value: Truth, Equality, Justice, Families... Help me grieve with what grieves You: Injustice, abuse, corruption, apathy… Let me not waste this chance, Lord. Here is my heart, use it.

One heartbeat at a time. Let me be Your voice. I see a lot of wrongs made right in the eyes of those who know less, and even in the eyes of those who should know better. This might earn me enemies. Speaking out might make me unpopular. But I want this opportunity to be used by You, Lord. Here’s my voice, use it.

One heartbeat at a time. Let me be Your hands. So many things need to be done. A lot of people can make a difference but won’t, simply because they feel they are not in position. Or maybe because it is, at the very least, inconvenient. But I want to be Your instrument. Here are my hands, Lord. Use them.

One heartbeat at a time. Let me be Your feet. I am part of not just my home or my group of friends. There are communities out there. My whole nation lies before me. Send me where You think You can use me best. You won’t ever send me unless You knew (with Your help) that I could, right? Here are my feet, Lord. Use them.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.”(Psalm 127:1 New International Version ©2011)

Through my heart, my voice, my hands and my feet, You will be able to watch over my nation and rebuild this land. And those whose spirits life’s monstrosities have crushed? They will start believing in You again, Lord. Because changes are coming…

   One heartbeat at a time.
