Unsung Heroes: CALEB

2015 Archives

However, the story of his life had been easily eclipsed with that of Moses and Joshua— Moses, the great emancipator who led the Israelites out of Egypt and Joshua, the brilliant military strategist who commanded the assaults in conquering the Promised Land. Filled with radical transformations and remarkable achievements, it was their lives that were chronicled in the annals of Christian history.

For decades of Caleb’s life, the Bible had been silent.

Where was Caleb when all the people of his generation but he and Joshua died one by one in the wilderness? Where was he when Joshua and the Israelites raided the walls of Jericho or attacked every fortified city?

He was right there—surviving the cruelty of a life lived without an identity, without a home… following orders from his then-fellow-spy now-commanding-general, Joshua… fighting the fiercest of the battles… and winning the toughest of wars.

He was right there – every single, agonizing step of the way.

Because he was holding on to a promise – a promise he knew was for him to claim.

“Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.” (Joshua 14:12)

Even after 45 long years of waiting for the realization of God’s promise to him, he just knew. It would come true. Because it was his God who told him so.

And indeed, he received his inheritance—the fulfillment of the promise he’d so long hidden in his heart.

Have you any promise from the Lord? Stay right there and don’t give up. Because it was the ever-faithful God who told you so. And just like Caleb did receive, you, too, will.
