But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29 ESV)

Persecuted, arrested, and jailed for preaching about Christ, the apostles had every human reason to stop preaching. But they didn’t back down. The next morning, they were back to business—back to preaching in the very place where the people who jailed them and warned them never to preach again were. But why? Was it because they were a bunch of authority-defying zealots who completely lost their minds? Well, no. It’s because they knew whose authority they should obey: God’s. The angel of the Lord clearly told them to “Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people all about this new life” (Acts 5:20). And so, they did.

Now, how about us? Are we unfazed by any opposition—no matter how threatening? Are we ready to do whatever God commands us to—even if it costs us everything? May we be like the apostles in their resoluteness and say, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
