Abraham’s Journey

Teachings for Men

Abraham’s Journey

MEMORY VERSE:

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,

who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,

and sat down on the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men,

So that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Hebrews 12:2

INTRODUCTION

A journey not completed is often not due to weary limbs and hungry stomachs but to eyes that no longer see the glory of the completed journey.  Success is in the eyes – not the hands and not the feet.  Abraham completed his journey because of his eyes.

I.  Abraham made his eyes see.

o   The eyes should be made to see both strengths and difficulties that are obviously before it.

o   The eyes should be made to see beyond what is obviously before it.

II. Abraham did not allow his eyes to be blinded.

  • The eyes should know where to look or they will be blinded.
  • The eyes should not lose focus or they will be blinded.

III. Abraham kept his eyes open.

  • When the eyes are weary, use all your strength, all your heart and all your soul to keep it open.
  • When the eyes are weary, ask God to keep them open.

CONCLUSION

Abraham’s road, like Jesus’, is set according to where God directed it.  With all Divine and human strength, Abraham’s eyes were always set on the right places: the real pitfalls, the real strengths, the real landmarks and the glory at the end.

REFLECTION: Let us ask ourselves the following questions:

  • Am I, honestly, on the right road?

If so, how do I know?

If not, what am I doing about it?

  • Do my eyes see?

Do they see the strengths I have?  If so, what are they?

Do they see the dangers ahead?  If so, what are they?

  • Where should my eyes be focused?

Is this realistic?  If so, why do I think so?

Is this realistic?  If not, why do I think so?  What must I do to make it realistic?

  • When are my eyes tired out?

What do I do during these times?

What do I ask God to do during these times?

  • Do I want to keep on this road I have decided to travel on?

If so… why?

If not… why not?

APPLICATION:

 = prayer of commitment =

Almighty God, You are the author and perfecter of my faith.  Thank You for the  heritage of faithfulness of those have gone before me.  Though imperfect, just like me, they persevered because they saw, they were not blinded and were always looking to You.  I pray that, I too, through Your help and to the utmost of my capacity, will also leave the same heritage to those who are coming after me.  Amen.

 = statement of commitment =

Whenever my eyes refuse to see, with all my strength, heart and soul, and with God’s help, I will make them see.  Whenever my eyes are tempted so that they may be blinded, I will look to my God – and to Him alone.   And with all my strength, heart and soul, and with God’s help, they will always be open until my journey is completed.
