Every year, whenever we celebrate our national church anniversary at the Luneta Grandstand, I see billboards and promotional posters of the Manila Ocean Park (just near Luneta Park). I used to ask myself, “ano bang meron sa Manila Ocean Park?” One Sunday morning after attending our local church worship service, my friend Lovely and I went to search for the answer.

It was not my first time to visit the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. I have seen the historic shrine several times when I was a grade schooler. But rather than a dejavu, my latest visit turned to be a time-travel to the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines.

History yet unfolds this year as the Philippines commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of its revered and celebrated national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Filipinos, young and old, hold close to their hearts the image of a patriotic man who literally faced his death in order redeem the honor of dying for his country. This year is indeed a celebration of heroism!

Going back to Tagaytay always brings excitement. And for my most recent Tagaytay trip, I have to thank one good friend. She kept me company during the rainy 2-hour bus ride, a long trip which was made memorable by a surprising revelation: she is engaged and will get married by the end of the year!

One of the things that I love about Christmas is the decorating the house. Putting up lanterns, poinsettias, garlands, and Christmas lights has always been fun and fulfilling. It is the only time of the year when our family bonds our artistic side together to make our home more beautiful and cheery than it already is.

It’s not everyday that we experience a string of firsts which are for the record. I just did, and I feel like it’s one for the Guinness! It happened during the world famous Pangasinan Bangus Festival, itself a 2003 Guinness World Record holder for the longest barbecue. For this trip, I travelled a total of 12 hours in a single day! Imagine that?! I never expected to have such a long journey from Manila to Dagupan and back.

A “pressure-ized” Friday night ended my busy week at the office. Since it’s the start of the weekend, I decided to try food tripping again to loosen up—this time within Manila (I’ve been a serious food tripper whenever I travel to different places).

I could not contain the joy as I alternately stood, walked, and sat for over five hours along Session Road in Baguio City on February 26 for the city’s annual flower festival, Panagbenga. It was the morning scheduled for Panagbenga’s Grand Float Parade!

The Philippines held the first International Hot Air Balloon festival in 1994. Now on its 16th year, the festival gathers thousands of local and foreign tourists in the open field of the Clark Free Port Zone in Pampanga to participate or just enjoy seeing hot air balloon flights and other aerosports and exhibitions. The four-day event, February 10-14, was an effective tourism activity for the province and the rest of Central Luzon. This festival is the biggest and most-awaited aviation sports event in the Philippines.

Our first destination was neither a Boracayesque beach nor a spa nestled in a relaxing rustic ambience. It was the Mabini Shrine in Brgy. Talaga. Oh how my college History professor would love me for this! I love History but memorizing details sometimes turn me into its unfaithful lover. I never remembered that great Filipino revolutionary and thinker Apolinario Mabini’s hometown was Tanauan until Kuya Mayong brought me to the hero’s ancestral house.

I was on the earliest plane bound for Tagbilaran on a Monday morning. The sun is yet to rise as I yawned away from the bustling sound of the morning rush of the metro. I was not expecting much from what I was about to see in Bohol so I just shrugged my shoulders and told myself I will just lie on the sand all day and enjoy the sun just like what I always do when I am on the beach. This trip was my third sea getaway in just a month so I was not expecting anything spectacular. The mere beach bumming already excites me. Nothing more. Apparently, I was in for a surprise. We checked in at a luxurious resort called AMORITA RESORT. On our way to Panglao Island with my headphones stuck to my ears, all I see was the usual Pinoy rural scene. I then asked the resort driver why the name AMORITA. He simply said “a little love”.
